Adaptive Takeoff Maneuver Optimization of a Sailing Boat for America’s Cup

چکیده

This paper presents the development of optimal takeoff maneuvers for an AC75 foiling sailboat competing in oldest and most prestigious competition world, America’s Cup. The many challenges to developing these due its nonlinear, high-dimensional, highly unstable dynamics. During maneuver, boat starts water with low speed (displacement mode) increases until it reaches steady-state (the hull stays out water). We optimized time boat’s transitions from displacement mode while maximizing projection velocity desired target direction (VMG). used adaptive control approach obtain maneuvers, which involved using a high-fidelity simulator data generation Jacobian learning optimization. solutions were subject value rate constraints based on physical limitations actuators, as well enforced by human (sailors) abilities perform such maneuvers. maneuver had average VMG 7.42 [m s-1], reached 14.8 [s] completed entire 36.4 [s]. provide insightful information about dynamic behavior this complex system serve benchmarks sailors.

Selection of the Racing Multihull Sailing Boat Equipment by the Ahp Method – a Case Study

The paper aims at presenting the optimal selection of the deck equipment for the racing multihull sailing boat using a novel methodology based on the modified wind loads design and the AHP method. The determination of the modified wind load design due to the mass of the crew on the side hull is essential because of possible greater stability moments. The load obtained in such a way has been com...

Investigating sailing styles and boat set-up on the performance of a hydrofoiling Moth dinghy

The adoption of hydrofoils in the International Moth class of dinghy has posed new challenges to sailors both in terms of the set-up of the boat and hydrofoils, and their sailing techniques and styles. The experience of sailors in the class indicates that the height above the water surface at which the boat is flown (ride height) and the amount of windward heel (heel angle) are critical factors...

Syddansk Universitet On steering a sailing ship in a wearing maneuver Jouffroy, Jerome

Compared to more conventional ships, little attention was given to nonlinear control design for ships sailing by the wind. Following our previous work, this paper addresses the issue of trajectory and reference input generation for a model that imitates the general behavior of sailing vessels. Specifically, we consider the generation of paths to perform a wearing maneuver. A feedforward control...

Adaptive sampling with a fleet of autonomous sailing boats

Autonomous sailing boats are an attractive solution to perform measurements at sea thanks to their low energy consumption. A fleet of such vehicles can also be used for adaptive sampling of an environmental field. In previous work, artificial potential fields have been used successfully in a local and real-time planner to carry out the autonomous navigation of one sailing boat. In this paper, w...
